Thinking of going blonde?

Transitioning from dark hair to bleach blonde is quite a lengthy process, to ensure the hair is protected and to minimise damage as much as possible. Many people are tempted to dye their hair at home - but when it comes to bleach, this is a really risky decision. To ensure you don’t do irreversible damage to your hair, we highly recommend you get a professional to complete the process for you - so pop into the salon and ask for advice if it’s something you’re considering.

Before the process

If you’ve never coloured your hair before, you’re in luck - the process will be much more simple than if you regularly change colour. If you’ve dyed your hair dark brown and now wish to go blonde, it’s definitely still possible - but the process is just a little bit longer.

Before you go into the salon to get your hair coloured, get your hair into the best condition possible. Limit using heat tools like curlers and straighteners, and deep condition your hair with leave-in treatments to nourish and replenish it. If possible, reduce washing your hair in the run-up to getting it coloured - letting your natural oils build up will help to protect your hair.

Going blonde

The process itself will take multiple trips into the salon - how many depends on how dark your hair is to begin with. If you’ve previously dyed your hair, the first step is to remove the current colour. The colour removing process strips your hair of the dyed colour, which will then make the lightening process much easier.

Your stylist will give you a completely personalised process depending on your unique hair type and desired final result. However the general process consists of a gradual lightening and toning, using a full head of highlights over multiple visits to gradually achieve the desired blonde. The process might take months and months until you’re completely happy with a bright blonde - but it’s important that it isn’t rushed. By trying to lighten your hair too quickly, you don’t give it enough time to adjust and recover between sessions, making it more prone to breakage and long-lasting damage.

Aftercare

Once you’re happy with your new blonde, it’s important to maintain it and keep your hair as healthy, shiny and glossy as possible. Treat yourself to high quality products specifically made for blonde hair. There are lots of shampoos, conditioners and treatments created to brighten and lengthen the life of blonde hair, while hydrating and repairing any damage. Purple shampoo will be your new best friend - it’s perfect for cooling down any brassy yellow tones that start to appear!
